According to the Piano territioriale di Coordinamento Provinciale 2006 prepared by the Provincia di Foggia, the western part of the municipality of Lesina is included in an area that is at serious risk of flooding, because of the torrential regime of the river Fortore during exceptional precipitation events when the Occhito dam is not enough to contain the surplus of water. Therefore, the lagoon represents a natural detention basin and can be considered to provide a benefit by preventing flooding in the reclaimed areas situated below the sea level (preventive benefit or provisioning services).
